Last week, LeBron James played snippets of Kendrick Lamar‘s new album DAMN. before anybody else heard it. Now, Kendrick and the NBA align once more, as his new single “Humble” becomes the theme song for the 2017 playoffs. Peep the ad featuring the track below.
Produced by Mike WiLL Made-It and Pluss, the song features stabbing piano keys that seem ripe for pregame pump-up music. The chorus (“Sit down, be humble”) is also the kind of thing players would love to tell opponents on the other team, so the song choice makes perfect sense.
Aside from K. Dot’s dense rapping, it sounds almost nothing like To Pimp a Butterfly, often hearkening back to sounds more prevalent on Section.80 (think of the voices he morphs into on the new album) or good kid, m.A.A.D. city.
Rumors swirled on the internet over the weekend that K. Dot had another new album dropping on Easter Sunday, but the whispers were only indicative of a market that too often moves on from material that just dropped. A suggestion for anyone looking for another new album from the Compton MC today: sit down and enjoy the LP he just gave us.
